PREREADING ACTIVITIES FOR THE CALL OF THE WILD

FOR MONDAY, MARCH 22 AND TUESDAY, MARCH 23

All activities should be completed in the order listed.  You must finish the first activity before beginning activity #2, etc.

(If you are absent, please go back and complete the activities missed before moving on.)

Activity 1:  Use the materials supplied to create your folder for the novel. Please make sure your first and last name and your block # is labeled on the folder.  Folders will be used in class and will be stored on the shelf in the classroom.  Folders do not leave the room unless you are instructed to take the folder home.  Students must have folders in class every day.

Activity 2:  Gaining background information-- watch the video "Gold Rush Fever" to learn about the circumstances associated with the late 1800's quest for gold.  Complete the "Gold Rush Fever Notes" handout while watching the video.  Put the completed "Notes" in your novel folder.

Activity 3:  On pages viii - ix in your book, read the "Historical Overview" about the Klondike Gold Rush. Then, read the "Introduction to the Novel" handout. Use your highlighter to note key information that gives you insight about the story.

Activity 4:  To gain information about the author, read pages iv-v in the front of your book.  Then, read the "Meet Jack London" handout.  In your Reader's Response Journal, make a list of 5 facts that you learned about Jack London that you feel shows credibility and background knowledge to write The Call of the Wild.  (please write complete, descriptive sentences to explain your connections to the novel).

Activity 5:  Writing prompt:  Summarize the information you gained by reading about the Klondike Gold Rush, Jack London, and the setting of the story.  (should be a 4-6 sentence, well-written summary)  Type your summary as a note in Edmodo and submit it.
